I became a mosaic artist around 14 years ago. What
began as an extension of my ceramics studies became a lifelong passion
for a centuries old art form. Initially I made my own tile in clay
to produce functional pieces such as tabletops as well as wall hangings
for display. This adventure gradually expanded to incorporate use
of other materials such as glass (both stained and vitreous), marbles,
gold, found objects, pebbles, and any other material that speaks
to me.
My design aesthetic
leans toward producing simple, graphic and contemporary works for
architectural, gallery, home, educational and community environments.
The materials used are dependent on the design of the work as well
as considerations around where the piece will ultimately live.
All the components
of design â€" including line, color, texture, tone
â€" come into play when producing a mosaic. Mosaic,
like sculpture, is a tactile as well as visual art form. It is designed
to be touched and viewed close up and from a distance
My creative
process normally starts with a sketch. If the piece is commissioned,
that sketch is accompanied by a dialogue with the client around
their needs and goals for the work. I very much enjoy the process
of the design as well as the ultimate execution of the art. It is
an art form that is both meditative and exciting.
