Jonathan W. Searles
I retired from the US Army in 1985 and then from teaching college and high school mathematics in 2003. One of my major interests has always been woodturning and wood art in general.
I turned my first small bowl as a teenager; however, did not turn anything else until I retired. Now much of my free time is spent in my shop preparing and turning wood projects. I am probably more of a hobbyist than an artist.
Finding a piece of wood on the curb or buying a piece from a wood dealer and then transforming that wood into platters, bowls, peppermills, ornaments, and burial urns for ashes is truly a pleasure. Friends will let me know if a tree is down in their neighborhood and will save choice pieces for me.
I have been turning in earnest since 2003. Each year I have found that my items are better than the year before. I have supported the Empty Bowls charity event at the Myerson for the past six years by donating many of the bowls I have turned.
I was a major contributor in a collaborative effort with some members of my woodturning club, Dallas Area Woodturners, in 2009. The project was a segmented museum filled with miniature wooden turnings. The project took first place for the Artistic Category as well as Best in Show at the American Association of Woodturner’s national convention held in June 2009 in Albuquerque.
